Incline

So you want extreme adventure? The Manitou Incline is a popular hiking trail located near Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs, Colorado.  The Manitou Incline is considered nature’s stair master and is an extreme trail. An old narrow gauge rail bed and utility line, the trail’s elevation increases by 2000 feet to the summit with an elevation of 8590 feet, up to a 68% grade at some places and is just over ¾ of mile. The total number of steps to the top is approximately 2750 steps of railroad ties, rocks and gravel to the top.

There are some survival tips. Most importantly hydrate – drink lots of water. Take the hike slow and steady, make sure to wear sunscreen (there isn’t any shade to rest in and the sun is intense), and do not hike in inclement weather. Take the Barr Trail down rather than returning the way you came (as directed). Most of all, take in the beautiful surroundings and take a moment to breathe and celebrate your success. If for some reason you want to take a short cut, there is a cut off about 2/3 of the way up. The hike is not conducive for little ones, so please leave them at home. Pets are not allowed on the trail.
